The single “Heronia” by German music act Rusty Gibbons was uploaded to YouTube 8 months ago, matching the general release time of the LP “Sunny Side Real Estate.” I was on one of my new music searches when I found the song, LP and music artist.
The “Sunny” LP is a full-bodied work. “Heronia” is a bouncy, rock entry point that highlights the variety of the collection. “Sunny” though is less rock and more acoustic at times. Others they blend the approaches with sound sonic effect.
The guy in charge of the music (writer, lead singer, guitar) is André Bocklisch. He’s a German Fine Arts / English teacher. It seems former band members of outfits called The Broken Scale and Blind Pilots have united under the name Rusty Gibbons. Stefan Witter produced the record.
“Recording my new album SUNNY SIDE REAL ESTATE was a lot of fun and weeks of experiment, of being with friends and working on something that we knew was kind of special and on a higher level than the stuff from former times.” —André Bocklisch

The set kicks off with “Good Morning, Soul” and we know already that we are in for an experience of memories and layers of sound. “Secrets Are For Keeping” might very well break your heart. “Alibies” could rescue it with a change in tempo. Then the lyrics tell you something else.
Just when you think the solemnity is permanent, Rusty Gibbons gives you the quirky, humorous “Shopping List.”
The versatility of the group shines through on “The Hunt. The Forest.” It arrives as a playful tune then adds undertones both vocal, lyrical and musical. Even rockabilly moments. They follow with the haunting ballad “Stanley Park.”
You never know what you are going to find in the huge wild world of music. I am excited to have further listens of “Sunny Side Real Estate.” It clearly was a labor of love by talented people.
More good news if you like Rusty Gibbons so far. They just posted 3 “B-sides” songs that were left off the LP. “Green Heart” was actually the very first song I heard from these guys. It’s wonderful and I am glad they have released it.
