Vibrant Mortals Celebrate Bittersweet Life In Debut EP

When you take the name Vibrant Mortals and name your debut EP “6 songs for dancing / weeping / laughing” you are immediately putting yourself out there as willing to gleefully approach whatever life sends your way. So here it is. Yes, a late-year EP that dances on graves in the most respectful, insightful way.

This musical journey comes out of a creative collaboration called Psychopomp Projects.

It’s maybe no suprise that Vibrant Mortals hail from Seattle. They have an experimental leaning with roots in the kind of pop that The Postal Service created ten years ago.

The debut EP of Seattle-based Vibrant Mortals, “6 songs for dancing / weeping / laughing” is candy-pop electronic dance beats wreathed by a 7-piece live orchestra and dark, urgent lyrics. We hope to dance beautifully, knowing full well that we are going to die.

This is invigorating stuff. Even if pop / dance aren’t your prefered genres you’ll get something out of these ponderings. Nathan Langston’s vocals waft in, out and between orchestral musings, dream beats and various clicks and bangs.

A hummingbird lands / on the lip of my coffee cup / and I tell my heart shut up, shut up, shut up! / This cannot be happening! / It cannot be happening! / It’s Maybe Happening!/ No I will not fall in love! / No I will not fall in love!

“Spring” Lyrics

It all builds up to the closing track “Refuge.” Talk about leaving the listener wanting more. Realized fully are sounds, themese and thoughts only hinted at in earlier tracks. It’s a full-on ode to getting by and getting on with it all.

What to do when you so acutely experience BOTH the ultra-beautiful and ultra-ugly in human existence?

Make a soundtrack, and dance to it.
