Butter Bath: Aussie Toby Anagnostis Melts With Smooth Single “Please Don’t Be Mad”

I first found Butter Bath when the EP “Spectator” made my radar back in early 2021. Especially the tune “Bed With Springs” (live living room performance) that somehow perfectly blended a warping neo-soul vibe with some psychedlic imprints.

Toby Anagnostis (Sydney, Australia) is a creative force as a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer. Butter Bath was one to watch and when their 2022 EP “Kurrajong Hotel” came out, I checked in.

Moody, woozy, groovy, and glistening, Butter Bath’s sophomore EP is a soulful and sun-soaked reverie: A mouth-watering indulgence of intimate reflection and spiritual connection filtered through buoyant, sweaty sonics that prove as captivating as they are cathartic.

“Please Don’t Be Mad” is the fourth song on the newest EP. When the UncleEars.com New Music Top 40 Chart made its debut on October 23 there was Butter Bath, starting off their chart life at #13. Since then it’s been a path of 8-5-3-3 for the lilting, swooning earworm. It’s what you call a real grower…and stayer.

Lyric Video Below.

“It’s important for me that my lyrics are vague enough for listeners to feel like they can come to their own conclusions about the meaning behind the songs, without being told directly what it’s about.”

Nearly every other song on the EP is more complex and produced than “Please Don’t Be Mad.” But there is something about the tune that sticks. The rolling synth work. The low, almost pensive vocals. The way they are mixed. The ability to slow the world down nearly completely with something lasting just over 3 minutes long. The teasing way a subtle bridge appears just before the fade out. Its inevitable deliberate roll.

“I think my sound is best described as psych-pop. The themes that I sing about, particularly in my new EP, are acutely personal, however, because they’re often about childhood experiences there is something innately universal about them.”

Other songs on the EP are rightfully getting some love. Try out the 70’s infused “Show Me That You Care.” It had me running to listen to “You Are Everything” by The Stylistics. Listen why here.

Toby keeps crazy busy with side projects too. Check out Brain Flowers.
