GIFT’s Debut LP “Momentary Presence” More Than Lives Up To The Hype

On those handy little labels and tags at the bottom of their Bandcamp band page Brooklyn, New York’s GIFT says their new LP “Momentary Presence” is “Garage Rock” and “Neo-Psychedlia.”

Based on other online reviews, it’s that…and much more.

TJ Freda’s vocal delivery is soft and his lyrics are sparse, complementing the expansive soundscapes on the album.

There are whole histories of psychedelic music collapsed into Momentary Presence: Creation Records-style coos and swirls, guitars phasing in and out like early Spiritualized, bold new wave synth melodies, the sonic immersion of shoegaze.

One of the most infectious and raucous releases to be unveiled yet. This dazzling creation emits psych noodles and synth passages and above all this impressive, immersive energy. Dreamy lo-fi vocal notes and harmonies bring this colourful character to the intricate atmosphere, one which grows and amplifies throughout.

What does Uncle Ears have to add to all of this high praise? I think “Momentary Presence” is an exciting listen. I hear (among other influences) a strong Charlatans UK vibe. That takes me right back to the late 80’s and early 90’s. These songs either jump out of the speakers at you or have the reverse effect of pulling you inside the speakers with them.

GIFT have multiple single videos up on the Dedtrange Records Youtube Channel. The view totals suggest the band are still in the process of being “discovered.” They are getting a bit more action on Spotify.

Now is your chance. Surely if this is your kind of music, GIFT is your kind of band.

GIFT should feel free to add these tags to their Bandcamp page as well: #mesmerizing #goodblurry #hazerock #cosmicpop #psychedlicopera #freemindtrip. I would of course also use #exciting. GIFT’s debut LP arrives as a full force of fully formed mind bending songcraft.
