“Deep Blue” by Nova Scotia band Long Call is one of the most intriguing, magical, ethereal songs of 2022. It instantly transports to another time and place. Hauntingly poetic and beautiful.
Uncle Ears sent some questions to brother / sister duo Landen and Avalon of Long Call in search of details about the creation of “Deep Blue.” They sent us back a wonderfully insightful video sharing the journey from idea to song, and from song to recording. Sometimes all of it happening at once.

Simple images become extraordinary: a country house, coffee, balloons, a first apartment. We sense and feel the end of a relationship. Lost connections, intersections of modern love. Deep blue. Deep blue.
Landen talks of putting “dust” on the sound of the song, giving it an inherent texture and age. Perhaps this is what I connect to most in the tune. It arrives brand spanking new in 2022 but sounding as if from a memory.
Avalon talks about the experience of arranging and producing the layered sound of “Deep Blue.” Sometimes they went ‘too far’ and retreated for the sake of the song.
“Deep Blue” will make its debut on the next Uncle Ears New Music Top 40 Chart, set to come out October 30. The only question is how high into the list it will land.
