Sometimes a song grabs your attention and won’t let go. “Only Lovers” by Sørvest is like that. It starts simply enough with a slight crescendo and what sounds like an overlapping Norwegian dialogue. The vocals arrive calmly, but soon enough turn into a chant. There is dramatic tension ahead.

The single progresses and harmonies turn into a striking segment of vocal “dum- dum-dah-dah’s” that swirl and build as the song reaches a climax. This is stuff you don’t hear often these days. It’s organic and cinematic. It’s powerful.

“Sørvest” translates from Norwegian to English as “Southwest.” The duo of Hedda Røste and Susanne Rønnekleiv are originally from Norway but are now living and recording in Brighton, UK. The map tells the story. They are southwest of home.
You can also check out their more traditional pop-inspired song “Craving You.”
The official video for “Only Lovers” adds to the cinematic nature of the song. Now we see Sørvest caught in nature. The world is both strikingly beautiful and deadly. Relationships can bring both deep satisfaction and deep emotional trauma.

Cinematic arrangement choices. Multiple cultures. Rich pop harmonies. Strong female vocals. I’m here for it. “Only Lovers” delivers.
