It’s An Off-Kilter World In Blokeacola’s EP “Wig Game” (2022 Best Of Nominee)

Forgive me if Blokeacola sounds a bit to my ears as if Neil Diamond of the 1960’s has returned with a 2022 technology-wisecracking sound. It’s really the ultimate compliment. His low register and slight rough rasp on “Taste The Brainbow” took me there instantly. It’s been on repeat ever since.

“Wig Game” is a flawless 6-track EP that we are putting in the hopper for “Uncle Ears EP of The Year 2022.” Blokeacola joins the guys from Opus Kink (‘Til The Stream Runs Dry) in that category.

“Wig Game” is an EP best left to your own discovery (Bandcamp link.) I won’t spoil your adventure. Get to it now. Or keep reading more below.

Welsh-born Blokeacola makes psychedelic indie pop. Blokeacola currently lives in Hangzhou (China). He released his debut single ‘Make It On Your Own’ in 2020. As befitting the colourful, intriguing music, Blokeacola immediately stood out from the crowd, not just in quirky name alone but also due to a striking persona, in short, the sporting of a bright orange helmet and an apparent penchant for fresh fruit.

“Taste The Brainbow” comes at you with a laid back beat and that Diamondesque vocal. (Wait, now I am also hearing 70’s Springsteen.) This is top shelf indie pop stuff. Delivered beautifully. It’s one thing to take a concept to record – it’s another to get out of your own way and let it stay simple. Well done.

You can’t see something that you don’t even know the word for

We’re all gonna work on Maggie’s botfarm forevermore

She lives on the side of the fence where they are legal aliens

And she says the best Americans are all Canadians

Lyric, “Trust The Braibow,” by Blokeacola

The entire “Wig Game” EP is a journey through an off-kilter world view of an off-kilter world. Why not deliver your razor-sharp observations with a spoonful of sugar? (It’s 2022 so — Stevia?) It’s a soundtrack for a soft psychpop afternoon.

Need more substance? Just tune in to the lyrics, and there you go. Puzzle provided. (Warning: many of the pieces are missing.) We are in the middle of our own little hellscape. Might as well tap your fingers, hum along and stare out at the industrial grey sky.

By the time “Salami Lama” arrives as track #4 we are deep into the journey Blokeacola is taking us on. The patchouli and pot are wafting up to the ceiling. Echoes of The Doors, as if they know James Bond personally, are reverbing off the walls of a room with just a single, tattered sofa in the center. International. Mystery. Another puff please.

Decades and eras are just a google search away. It’s all here, all at once now. This ‘hellscape’ is ripe with both opportunity and peril. Are we teaching our youth to navigate? To know the differences? Can we even recall what those differences were? Within the cosmic-tripping lyrics of the closing track “Splendid Creatures” we find a warning.

Art is a lie that tells the truth

This department store museum

Is the stuff that screams are made of
