Toronto’s Rapport Serves Up An 80’s 6-Pack Of “Gold” on 2022 EP ‘Wonderwave’

Floating Through The Wonderwave (Youtube tracks) is a welcome trip back to 1980’s style wave pop by Toronto outfit Rapport. The EP is six songs of sweet, fizzy pleasure.

It’s like having a favorite 1980’s soda suddenly appear chilled and ready to go in the back of your fridge.

Speaking on the track “Going Nowhere,” frontwoman Maddy Wilde says: “I’m a self-described chump. Sometimes I’ll find myself in a relationship where I’m the lesser-than and the other person calls all the shots. They have the ability to improvise and lead the way with confidence while I struggle to find my own way. Most of the time this is just in my head. I tend to over analyze their accomplishments and my lack-thereof.

I’m loving the influences I hear. Maybe some Belinda Carlisle in lead singer and song composer Maddy Wilde’s high range, breathing and delivery. Carlisle (and even the Go Go’s) musically as well.

Speaking on the track “Can’t Get It To Last,” Maddy Wilde of the band says: “On the surface, this probably sounds like your average love song. But it’s really about friendships and growing apart. Close friendships take different shapes- for example, friends who do everything together but have never actually been vulnerable with one another. It’s like maintaining a light and fluffy connection that has never really progressed further than a casual relationship. Friendships like this can go on for ages, and they are valuable, but they don’t seem to last as long.”

Pop was still a dominant force in 80’s music. We might tend to look back and highlight the punk, wave and college radio scenes of the 80’s that drew in so many outsiders and then influenced the 1990’s.

But don’t forget the Go Go’s, Expose, Quarterflash, Roxette, The Motels, Romeo Void and many more who jumped into a scene dominated by Madonna and made their own mark.

Don’t Harden Your Heart to what Rapport have to offer in 2022. It’s a sound as smooth and spicy as 7up Gold.

And just for the record, I LOVED 7up Gold.
