“Need You Around” is the kind of song you want to find early in the morning when you are leaving the beach to find a place to have breakfast. It’s Saturday. It’s foggy. Maybe it’s the hunger talking, but suddenly your needs are made clear to you. Something, or someone, is missing. Maybe not right now, but at some point in your life, or in your day. There are times when alone morphs into need you around.
“The song ‘Need You Around’ happened unexpectedly,” Palmer says. “I love playing more groove-based songs on the piano and I just started playing the main groove to ‘Need You Around’ one day, not expecting it to turn into anything. After a few months, I noticed I couldn’t sit down at the piano without playing this groove. I loved the piano part I’d come up with so much, I realised I had to take it somewhere and turn it into a complete song.”

Ally Palmer sneaks up on you. A soft voice in a high range that has something to say but wants you to take the effort to find out what that is. Not to worry though — there is a smooth instrumental vibe to move you in the right direction.
Palmer’s debut LP goes by the same title: Need You Around (YouTube playlist link.) I encourage a longer listen. You will be rewarded.

“Need You Around” emerges out of the fog with a jazz-infused beat complemented by an organ synthesizer and guitars. In a three and a half minute tune Palmer’s voice doesn’t arrive until over a minute in. It does so with a slightly raspy, breathy and inviting tone.
It might be time for breakfast, but you stay in the car until the song ends. Tap sand off your sneakers. Then hit the repeat button, and pause. Just lining up a sweet new tune for after your eggs and toast.
Ally is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, a surfer and environmentalist at heart. Ally’s sound is reflective of the music that she loves and has listened to throughout her musical life. Growing up listening to Bruce Springsteen, Paul Kelly, Neil Young and Van Morrison on crackling vinyl records and having family sing-a-longs by the campfire sparked her early love for classic music.
