Swansea Skag Delivers Curious Clever Magic On Single “DOG BOY”

Sometimes the sound of a voice is enough to carry a moment of magic. Imagine then if the voice also has something real to say.

Am I invincible
Swimming in cement, What a stupid universe, Spinning in my head Making myself miserable, Wondering what they said, Am I invisible
Or easy to forget

Meet Mason Stover. He has something real to say. And his music has magic to deliver. Curious, clever, magic. He’s Swansea Skag.

A brief bio blurb on the Swansea Skag Bandcamp page (link) says: “Mason grew up across the Midwest between Columbus and Cleveland, the youngest of five to a pastor father in a family whose religious tradition had begun to show its cracks.

Hey, I’ve been there. Never lived in the Midwest, but was one of five (second oldest) pastor’s kids. The struggle is real.

Swansea Skag pulls no punches when it comes to laying his story bare on his debut EP, you’ll be dead before you know it. For all who are willing to listen, Mason Stover, the artist behind Swansea Skag, passionately channels trauma, mistakes, and recovery into his music. “The opposite of addiction is connection,” Mason confesses, reflecting on lessons learned through his journey of overcoming addiction.

There is an ethereal nature to the opening moments of DOG BOY. Dare we say, even sacred? The call of the human soul exists even if religion has pulled it away from campfires and into brick buildings with painted glass. All of this is 2:21. The magic ends abruptly but lingers.

In “DOG DAYS” Swansea Skag paints a portrait of self-inflicted loneliness covering a hidden desire to connect. Pushing people away while wondering why you are lonely is a staple for PK’s. It’s what we do.

The campfire still calls for our return, to join the lineage. To gather together. To breathe in. To come out of the woods.

Swansea Skag is on to himself. It’s early enough in his life to make a difference, to maintain the change. Not for multitudes and masses yearning for honest music that cuts right to the bone…yeah, sure —maybe that— but more for the audience he’s really trying to rescue…the one inside his head.

Forget what I just told you

What’s the cost you’d pay

To know where my heart is

No one’s worth it all

Say yes

Being your own savior is underrated.
