Crawling up out of a fuzzed and buzzed guitar intro and seductively into your ears comes the tune “Televangelist” by UK group Idle Hours. In the name of not being sold on “religion,” they deliver something very much worth buying.
If only the system itself wasn’t a self-designed trap. If only the jangle of guitars could set the world free and make the artist a liberator rather than a prisoner. If only we were all trained in the art of vetting “saviors.”
“Televangelist” invites you to think, if you want to. Open your mind and rock towards the sound of truth. Or, you could just soak in the atmosphere coming through the speakers towards your head.
Manchester-based quartet Idle Hours have released their latest single, “Televangelist” and announced their debut EP The Fourth Wall, set for release August 19. Produced by Seanda Mcphail (The Orielles, Doves, Blanketman), this jangly guitar jam is an edgier but just as catchy follow up from their recent single “Souvenirs”.

A key aspect of Manchester, is that you’ll never fail to find the uprising indie talent in each corner, one of which is Idle Hours. The four piece outfit formed of Jack Waldron (Vocals, Guitar), Alex Needham (Bass), Tom Ashton (Guitar, Backing Vocals) and Jimmy Brown (Drums) are described as a blend of surf-pop, infused with tinges of indie rock, catchy melodies and impactful lyricism.

Speak in your natural tongue
Spread live across the nation
Fed into every home
Designer suit and tie with magenta tone
A CK exorcismStare down the gut of the lens
And save me from the clutches
A waste of oxygen
I close my eyes and the satellites
Leave me where I startedA race to close the eyelids
(A rush of blood to blame on your violent streak)
Jet lagged and uninvitedLate night celebrity guest
Contagious belly laughter
I hope it never ends
(Close knit, tight lipped)
Circle of friends
Would tell a different storyA race to close the eyelids

(A rush of blood to blame on your violent streak)
Jet lagged and uninvited
(If Jesus lived he’d fly first class on a free)
Dodge the paparazzi and autographs
(A rush of blood, a flux like a kick in the teeth)
Jet lagged and not feeling myself

I am hearing echoes and inspiration of Duran Duran in both the vocals and the arrangement of Televangelist, and I am here for it.
Idle Hours delivers a completely engrossing sound and vocal dynamic. It’s not 1985 anymore and that’s OK. 2022 is sounding better than ever.
