INTERVIEW: Bones & Lemonade Put It All Together On Tune “Honey Dove!”

Vancouver (WA) duo Bones & Lemonade (Bandcamp link) begin their song “Honey Dove!” with a simple acoustic guitar. 34 seconds in an explosion of sound takes the track forward. Ears perk up. Senses are heightened. We’re along for the ride.

Meet The Band

Richard (Reynolds) and I have been making music together since summer of 2019, using whatever tools we have access to at home,” says the other half of Bones & Lemonade, Kellen Woolard. “We started on GarageBand with a blue snowball mic, and have since grown our collection of recording gear and software knowledge just figuring it out as we go. We just like to have fun recording music and sharing it with people.”

Putting “Honey Dove!” Together

Kellen explains the evolution of “Honey Dove!” “This song started as an instrumental, starting with the acoustic guitar as a base to layer all the other instruments over. We’re big fans of the quiet/loud dynamic so we went with acoustic verses and electric choruses to shift the dynamics of the track. I then added a drum track as well as bass, synth, and shakers on the instrumental breaks. The song remained without lyrics or any type of vocal from late 2019 to around summer of 2021 when we finished it. We were digging through old ideas to see if there was anything we wanted to finish, and that instrumental came up. Richard got to work writing the lyrics that afternoon and we tried out different melodies to see what would work and the final product turned out great.”

Bones & Lemonade have a full album out now on Bandcamp. 11 songs give you an introduction to the duo. “Honey Dove!” is track #7. It showcases the duo’s songcraft and playing skills. It’s also just a really cool banger that gets stuck in your head. But there are more gems on the LP. Check them out.

Honey Dove!

Honey dove
Feel the cold in your eyes
Sailing above
The snow reflecting the light

Fly by yourself
Don’t come back to me with broken wings again
Under your breath
Keep subtracting me unless you need a friend

Honey dove
Always told a lie
So one day
She suddenly had taken to the sky

Fly by yourself
Don’t come back to me with broken wings again
Under your breath
Keep subtracting me unless you need a friend

Feathers frozen in the tundra
Only hoping to be warmer
Freezing is for my one and only
That has left and made me a lonely soul
