Richmond, Virginia band Strange Cut have popped up on Bandcamp with a page for their new album Strange As It Seems (link.) Waiting in the weeds at track #10 is a funky revelation called “Trigger Happy Love.”
The drums kick in. Cue the wail of tight guitars and the brooding vocals of Jarrod Brown. Under three minutes later there will be broken hearts and a pool of red.
Strange Cut began with Jarrod Brown (lead vocals, lyrics) and Rob Dessimoz (bass) in 2015. Nathan Burns (guitar) soon joined to add an exterior change of pace. Josh Schmidt (guitar, backing vocals) and Andrew Hylton (guitar, backing vocals) round things out. Their sound is a concoction of modern beats and melodies fashioned after the rock/experimental influences.

Strange Cut get it all just right with this moody tapper. “Trigger Happy Love” balances funk and pluck just like its protagonist balances multiple lovers.
Imagery abounds. Heart-shaped ice cubes melt. A picture in the locket of another man’s woman. It all means no good, but it’s too good to look away.
The chorus warns us with a sour lemon guitar feedback. But we still order one more round. It can’t end well. It’s all been building. We’ve been given the signs. But our ears have lied to us. It’s too late.
The beat is cool. But the lover is a killer whose fate stops the track.
