Jeremie Albino Touches Deeply With Two Yearning Versions Of “Acre Of Land”

I’m no expert in the state of being for people in their 30’s. That was half my lifetime ago and the world has changed so much since then. Yet when I listed to Jeremie Albino’s “Acre Of Land” I immediately have a sense of kinship with people around that age.

Isn’t life supposed to be delivering for them by now? Will the hard work ever pay off? Will they ever own their own “Acre Of Land?” These are questions many of us likely pondered in our 30’s too. Albino’s raspy crooning suggests that maybe for this generation, there is less hope and thus even more yearning.

Acre Of Land by Jeremie Albino (Lyrics)

All I ever wanted
Was a house and a couple acres of land
Me and my loving baby walking hand in hand
But that dream’s so far gone
I’m always on the road
I’m always on the run
Feels like I’m never coming home
But life will come along some day
And we can take our time
Nothing’s gonna stop that train
Tomorrow sun is bound to shine I’ll find you standing there
I won’t believe my eyes
Out in such a lonely place
Maybe it just takes some time

I’ll call you in the morning
It’s late I hope you’re sleeping tight I know that I’ve been running
Been trying to call you every night
Wish you was here and I was there I’ve been counting all the miles
And I’m hanging on with all I can
So won’t you hold on tight
Life will come along some day
And we can take our time
Nothing’s gonna stop that train
Tomorrow sun is bound to shine I will find you standing there
I won’t believe my eyes
Out in such a lonely place
Maybe it just takes some time
All I ever wanted
Was a house and a couple acres of land
Me and my loving baby walking hand in hand

And one day
I’ll find that loving home
Ill find that loving baby’s arms
Couple acres to roam
Life will come along some day
And we can take our time
Nothing’s gonna stop that train
Tomorrow sun is bound to shine I’ll find you standing there
And I won’t believe my eyes
Out in such a lonely place
Maybe it just takes some time

The live version of “Acre Of Land” (top of page video) is mesmerizing and heartbreaking. Deeply felt and achingly delivered. Taking the listener’s breath away.

The studio version and accompanying video ramble out the tune in a way that highlights a feeling of never-ending road trips that seem to end just short of the desired destination. Maybe the ending is a signal of hope. Albino arrives and his house is not empty.

Maybe it just takes some time.

“Acre Of Land” places Albino in the storied lineage of expansive road songs, recalling the likes of heartland rock touchstones like Bruce Springsteen. Albino’s writing reflects on the fundamental contradiction of a wanderer, one who feels the call of the unknown when at home and feels the pull of loved ones when on the road.

Country/blues musician Jeremie Albino spent a decade as a farm worker in Ontario’s Prince Edward County, where he would callus his palms in the field by day, and his fingertips on the guitar by night.

You can hear this in his music, a timeless blend of folk, rock and blues that evokes a bygone era as he tells stories of hard work, love and loneliness.
