Smirk And Roll Abounds As The New Nostalgia Check Into “Ibis Budget”

Smirk and Roll? That’s a fine place to start with a headline for “Ibis Budget” by The New Nostalgia. A quick google session later (for us Americans) reveals it’s a hotel chain with a budget option (link.)

There is pomp and confidence in the UK band as they have sardonic fun with the idea that for the current generation a budget night away might well be all they can ever afford.

Front man Patrick McCallion (Slim Radio Sessions podcast link) infuses his take with plenty of smirk as his bandmates roll out a pounding performance.

London-based quartet The New Nostalgia show melodic vigor and swagger on “Ibis Budget,” their first single of 2022. Suave vocals and a grooving bass line build a conversational intro, capturing the surreal day-to-day of “living out of a suitcase in a discount airport hotel.”

Ah the “Ibis Budget”, my favourite hotel chain when you just need something for the night, and now there’s a theme for the low-end hotel. One thing to mention is that The New Nostalgia’s new cut is hardly low-end, more rather a top-notch punk-rock track with plenty of shouty vocals you can easily see thousands of punters in a festival field singing back to them.

The track is pulled from their upcoming new LP BLEED & BLOOM and details the relatable but specific experience of staying in an Ibis budget hotel. There is a tongue in cheek sense of guile and attitude on the track, and the outfit rip through a searing and frantic three and a half minutes of bad decisions and chaotic commentary.
